Chapter 11

“I’m crazy about you. Does that count?” Race growled and his eyes flashed amber as Lion made himself know. Danika’s mouth dropped in horror and she took a step back putting even more distance between them.

“Damn it, Lion.”

“She denied us. I couldn’t help it.”

“Try,” Race snarled. “We only have one shot here. If we scare her off, we may never get her back.”

Race closed his eyes and waited for Lion to calm his shit. When he opened them, he noticed Danika had taken another step back. “I will not hurt you. I would rather cut off my own hands then cause you a millisecond of pain.”

He held out his hands and approached her with care. Treating her as if she were a frightened animal. In a way she was. His mate was certainly ready to bolt. “And I don’t eat people, not even rich suspecting ones. I prefer to buy my meat at the grocery story like a normal person.” He winked. Race felt like he’d on the lottery when her eyes sparked briefly with humor. “Will you hear me out? Please?”

Danika nibbled her lip as she considered his request. He could practically hear her weighing the pros and cons of sticking around versus bolting. “I guess.” He blew out the breath he’d been holding when she finally moved and sat on one end of the sofa. She pointed to the opposite end. “Stay on that side, for now.”

“Alright.” Race would give into any request as long as it didn’t involve her leaving. He sat and turned his body towards her resting his back against the arm of the sofa.

Danika mirrored his pose. “I have no idea what questions I should ask in this situation.

“I wouldn’t expect you to.” He sniffed the air. The fear he scented coming from her earlier had dissipated. “Why don’t I start at the beginning and work my way up to the present?”

She nodded. “Okay.”

“There are many mystical creatures in this world. Most humans are not aware of them. But some are. Their human mates for example. There are also others we know we can trust. Allies. Many are members of families who have passed our secrets down from one generation to the next.”

“How did you become a… were, um, lion?”

“Werelion? That’s not a thing.” Race rolled his eyes. “I’m a lion shifter. My human and lion share equal halves of my soul. However, my humanity controls my animal instincts. There are those who chose not to recognize our human halves over our beasts. They are the exception not the rule. Mindless beast is not who we are. We aren’t cursed like werewolves who long ago lost their humanity.”

Danika gasped, and her hand flew to her mouth. “You said werewolves weren’t a thing,” she asserted in an accusatory tone.

“I said werelions weren’t.”

“Oh.” Danika swallowed loudly. “Are vampires real, too?”

“Yes, they are, but you rarely run across one nowadays. They’ve become practically extinct over the last century. Vampires and Weres are created in much the same way as Hollywood depicts.
